Democrats' National Energy Tax (Waxman-Markey bill)
American families across our country are struggling to pay their energy bills and find good jobs during a serious recession. However, instead of proposing a positive solution to help Americans, Democrats passed the Waxman-Markey National Energy Tax bill (H.R. 2454) that will actually spike energy bills, decrease our energy supply, discourage job creation and increase our dependence on foreign oil.

If signed into law, the Waxman-Markey National Energy Tax is expected to:

  • Cost 2.5 million American jobs (National Black Chamber of Commerce)
  • Decrease America’s Gross Domestic Product by 2.5 percent (Brookings Institute)
  • Raise inflation-adjusted gasoline prices by 58 percent (Heritage Foundation)

The Democrats’ approach won’t help our nation overcome our energy and economic problems. Americans need a better solution that will actually create new jobs and new energy.

In June, House Republicans introduced the American Energy Act (H.R. 2846) - an all-of-the-above energy plan that will responsibly use our natural resources to create new energy and make our environment cleaner. This bill includes specific measures to encourage development of renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydropower, nuclear and biomass, while also producing more American-made oil and natural gas.

Instead of moving forward with a National Energy Tax, Democrats should hold a vote on the American Energy Act.
